||Todd Swank, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Servers Direct, discusses why custom servers do not have to be expensive.
With an off-the-shelf solution from a HP or Dell, the pricing can be very good because they've got economies of scale. They're building thousands and thousands of that particular SKU, so they've typically got a pretty set price point depending on that particular SKU.
With custom solution providers, Servers Direct is building servers based on the customer's needs and so many times, it comes down to the components they need and what features they're seeking in that system. If Servers Direct needs higher quality components, the price naturally is going to be higher. But if that same level of performance is not needed and budget is a bigger concern, then Servers Direct can find lower priced components to come up with the solution.
You will not always be paying more for a custom solution. Sometimes it depends on what you need. If you need to have a certain solution based on your requirements and if you're looking at similar products with similar capabilities from one of the big guys, such as a different hard drive, it could very much come in at the same price as the off-the-shelf solution or sometimes even less, depending on the situation.
Most organizations are going to have a mix of different servers in their organization. If they've purchased HP or Dell in the past, they'll probably still have some of those servers in existence. But when they have a unique need or specific requirement, they'll want to have something very custom. They will then approach a custom system builder to develop that solution for them so that they can bring it into their environment.
